A word about repairing your own amp

I don't want to discourage anyone from trying to repair their own amp, but there are some things you should know. While the information contained in this site and the dB-r Forums may very well be enough to help you repair your own amplifier, this won't always be the case. You can end up spending more money than if you had just sent it in to our shop for repair in the first place. Here's why:

Lots of times, you just have to replace some smoked FETs. This is usually a visible inidicator, but not always. FET's go bad and no smoke, no residue nothing. Look just like any other FET. And you put in new FETs and they just go up in smoke again..., as soon as you turn the amp on.

Also your own SAFETY is a concern, power supply rail voltages in amplifiers can reach up to 100 VOLTS OR MORE AC. You do not want to mess with that unless you know what you are doing... It will shock the crap out of you.

I hear this all the time with people trying to repair their own amp, they don't understand how it works, they replace the smoked parts, and then when they turn it back on, POOF up in smoke again, all that money and time wasted. And there is more, you have drivers that go bad, and never look like they are bad, and there can be anywhere from 10-20 of them. And the IC's go bad and no indication of being bad. The transformer windings short out etc none of this visible without an oscilloscope.

You really need to know how the amp works, every section of it to understand how to repair it. Just changing parts is not going to do the trick. You need an oscilloscope, and know how to use it and what signals to look for inside the amp.And most people can't solder to save their lives, so if you don't do a good job with the soldering, your amp will end up going out again soon because a part came loose or shorted over a crappy solder connection.

I have set my rates really reasonable and if you really like the amp, send it in for repair. You can see what kind of job we do on the repairs page. We take pride in our work, and do not half ass your repair like a lot of shops will. We are in business to stay in business and doing the job right and making the customer happy is what we are all about.
